I have been working in the tourism industry for over 20 years, and yes, it makes sense that I should have enjoyed every corner of Costa Rica, but that is not the case. The life we used to have was full of meetings, traveling for work, and just becoming part of the crazy busy everyday routine would not let us pay attention to all the treasures that were very close to us.
So after 15 long years, I decided to return to one of my favorite places that I never had the time to visit… the South Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. And what made me feel absolutely thrilled was to find an even more beautiful, colorful, happy, and unique destination. Driving there from San Jose may take approximately 3.5 hours, and the ride itself is an experience that takes you through one of our most beautiful rainforests to the lowlands of the Caribbean.
Once you arrive in Limon, the main town of the area, you know you are somewhere else, and after driving next to the amazing coastline for about an hour, you finally reach paradise. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca welcomes you with its eclectic style. Caribbean colorful wooden architecture, amazing golden or deep-black volcanic sand beaches, incredible local gastronomy, and happy people riding bikes all over town. Its heritage comes from afro-descendent settlers that have evolved into a one-of-a-kind culture that makes this place unique.
Once in your hotel, where there are many and all full of personality, the place is yours to discover. Riding your bike or driving your car on a beach-hopping experience is the way to go. Be ready to make a plan because the options are all perfect. The beaches here are so lush, secluded, accessible, and friendly that pictures can not describe them. The rainforest actually falls into the sea, making wonderful spots to spend the whole day enjoying emerald warm waters, relaxing under the many trees with a coconut, and sipping the soul of the Caribbean.
If your plan is Costa Rica, make sure the Caribbean Coast is part of it. I can assure you the experience will be unforgettable. Breaking free from the stress we are living, getting fulfilled with the positive energy that the beaches, people, culture, gastronomy, and happiness is what we all deserve, and this place is the place.
