Astrotourism in Costa Rica: Discover the Best Stargazing Spots

Costa Rica is rapidly emerging as a prime destination for astrotourism, combining its stunning natural landscapes with clear, star-filled skies. The country’s location near the equator allows stargazers to observe constellations from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, offering a unique celestial experience. Key areas such as Corcovado, Santa Rosa, and Chirripó National Parks are particularly suitable for stargazing due to low light pollution and expansive views of the Milky Way, nebulae, and meteor showers

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) is actively promoting astrotourism as a sustainable travel niche, emphasizing dark-sky conservation and working with local communities to develop astrotourism infrastructure. This initiative aims to attract both tourists and educational groups, as astrotourism not only provides breathtaking experiences but also fosters interest in astronomy and environmental awareness

Popular spots like Arenal Observatory Lodge and Hacienda Guachipelin offer guided stargazing experiences, allowing visitors to marvel at the night sky while surrounded by Costa Rica’s lush ecosystems. In truth, Costa Rica boasts hundreds of stargazing locations. The coasts are particularly renowned for their clear skies, free from city lights that often hinder the stargazing experience. Beyond the coasts, rural areas and even certain spots within the metropolitan area offer excellent sky-watching opportunities. The following images, for example, were taken in Heredia, near San José, the country’s capital.
