The Costa Ricans

The Costa RicansMost visitors to our country are struck by the kindness of our people, known as “Ticos”. Whether in the heart of the big city or on a country road, travelers are greeted with a friendly smile and willingness to help you find your way. Costa Rica’s national identity comes from a long history of peace and democracy within a region of conflict. A sense of human rights and equality permeate the culture. This, along with an agricultural mentality of working hard and helping one’s neighbors has helped foster Costa Rican identity as a proud, friendly, peace loving people. Ticos are also known for their sociability and seemingly innate desire to leave a good impression or “quedar bien”, as well as a love of telling jokes or “chiles”. And, of course, Ticos are quick to share a profound love for their national pastime, soccer, during impromptu games called “mejengas”. For a candid peek at Costa Rican life, our guides can provide a unique local perspective on Costa Rica’s past, present and future.
