The Costa Ricans
Most visitors to our country are struck by the kindness of our people, known as “Ticos”. Whether in the heart of the big city or on a country road, travelers are greeted with a friendly smile and willingness to help you find your way. Costa Rica’s national identity comes from a long history of peace and democracy within a region of conflict. A sense of human rights and equality permeate the culture. This, along with an agricultural mentality of working hard and helping one’s neighbors has helped foster Costa Rican identity as a proud, friendly, peace loving people. Ticos are also known for their sociability and seemingly innate desire to leave a good impression or “quedar bien”, as well as a love of telling jokes or “chiles”. And, of course, Ticos are quick to share a profound love for their national pastime, soccer, during impromptu games called “mejengas”. For a candid peek at Costa Rican life, our guides can provide a unique local perspective on Costa Rica’s past, present and future.
