ministro-picThe Tourism Minister of Costa Rica, Carlos Benavides, became the first Costa Rican president of the World Tourism Organization, after being elected during the 84th meeting of the Executive Council last Thursday at the Congress Palace in Madrid, Spain.

 

“The appointment of Benavides to this important position recognizes the growing reputation of Costa Rica in relation to sustainable tourism. Our country has become a sustainable development global reference”, said Benavides, pleased with the position.

Benavides also considers that his presidency will make it easier for Costa Rica to fulfill the tourism goals aimed at attracting visitors from target markets such as Europe and the United States. “This is a very important moment for Costa Rica where by its image and positioning as a world tourism destination can be reinforced”, he added.

Costa Rica has been part of the OMT Executive Committee for the last three years. During this time it has also achieved other important global positions, such as being a member of the World Ethic Tourism Committee and being reelected to the Sustainable Development Committee. There are 154 member countries in the OMT.
