Bienvenidos a Costa Rica
Costa Rica is nothing short of an ecological wonderland. Containing five percent of the earth's biodiversity, Costa Rica's natural environment is rich beyond its size, but fragile. Help protect our world's environment as you learn creative ways to guard against environmental degradation through a local community service project. Learn firsthand about Costa Rica's nationwide conservation efforts, improve your Spanish every day, and experience the beauty of tropical forests and pristine beaches.
Orientation in San José
You and your group spend three days getting to know Costa Rica by exploring the San José area. Begin using your Spanish as you visit cultural sites, grab lunch at a café, and take in a soccer game at Sabana Park.
Homestay and Ecological Community Service
Experience life in rural Costa Rica as you play soccer with local students, explore the region with your group and host siblings, and learn to cook gallo pinto. Then, deepen your appreciation of the country's fragile ecosystem and natural beauty as you work alongside Costa Ricans on an ecological preservation project.
Sample host communities: San Isidro de El General, Palmares, Atenas
Sample service projects: Work in a cloud forest; plant organic coffee trees and seedlings for habitat restoration; help build a recycling center; paint and repair community buildings.
Travel and Discovery
On your way to the Pacific, you and your group explore a variety of terrains, gaining a deeper appreciation of Costa Rica's rich cultural and environmental diversity.
Sample activities: Visit the world-famous Monteverde Cloud Forest and discover hundreds of tropical birds, indigenous animals, and lush plants; shop for beautiful handicrafts in the local markets of San José; enjoy the thrill of white-water rafting on the Sarapiqui River; hike in spectacular Poás Volcano National Park; enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica's coastline.
